Everything you Need to Know About the new Security + (SYO-601)

CompTIA Security+ is a fundamental certification that has helped thousands of cybersecurity professionals advance in their careers. The Security + is also approved by the DoD to meet the 8570.01 requirements. With over 500,000 certified professionals the Security + is also one of the most popular cybersecurity certifications currently available today. The current version of the Security + is SYO-501  and the new version which is SY0-601 will be launched in November of 2020.  

 

What is Changing?

The Security + changes every three years to keep up with updated technologies that are actively being used in the industry. In SYO-501 there are 6 total domains and each domain is weighted differently; however, in the new SYO-601 there are only 5 total domains. The new SYO-601 exam only has 35 exam objectives compared to 37 with the SYO-501. CompTIA has released all of the exam objectives which can be found on their official website.

SYO – 501

  3. Architecture and Design 15%

SYO – 601

The Security + SYO-601 covers updated technologies and focuses on the most demanded skills requested by employers and organizations all over the world. The new exam content is structured differently and focuses on more real-world examples. CompTIA did on this purpose to help candidates understand the meaning of each exam objective. It was also designed to help provide insight into how IT professionals carry themselves and what is expected at enterprise organizations.

 

SYO-601 Exam Details

The exam details have not changed since the SYO-501 just the contents. The recommended experience is still 2 years of prior work experience in IT with a focus on security; however, there are no required prerequisites to sit for the SYO-601 exam. There is a maximum of 90 questions, and they mix between multiple-choice and performance-based simulation questions. Candidates have a total of 90 minutes to complete the exam and the passing score is 750 on a scale of 100-950.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stop studying for the SYO-501 exam and focus on the SYO-601 exam instead?

There is a six-month grace period whenever CompTIA releases a new exam so after the SYO-601 is officially launched in November, and this gives plenty of time to complete studying instead of starting all over.

How much longer will the SYO-501 exam be available?

CompTIA has announced that the SYO-501 will remain available until July of 2021.

When will the SYO-601 exam be available?

The SYO-601 will launch in November of 2020 and be available for the next 3 years.
