About Cyber Kung Fu Instructor Larry Greenblatt
Listen in on one of instructor Larry Greenblatt’s certification boot camp classes and you might think you were listening to a martial arts class. That's by design.Sun Tzu said:“The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin.  Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected”
The principles behind information technology security are the same as those in a variety of different martial arts,” Larry says – and he ought to know. In addition to his more than twenty five years of information technology and security experience, he has practiced martial arts since he was 11 years old and holds multiple black belts in disciplines ranging from Kick Boxing and other modern MMA styles as well as traditional styles such as Tai Chi and Shaolin Kung Fu. “All of those techniques are like tools to treat different types of risk including malicious attacks,” Larry explains. “Most of the real threats are operational mistakes. Having good daily habits can mitigate these. Sometimes however attacks are the result of deliberate actions by an enemy. By spending time contemplating and practicing warfare techniques we can become more effective at handling our security problems.Dramatic martial arts analogies and demonstrations have made Larry’s classes exciting and relevant – especially to his many students who require certification as part of their work with America’s armed forces. Information security is often explained as “The things you know that you know, the things you know that you don't know and finally the things that you don't know that you don't know. But Larry suggests that it is likely that “The things you thought you knew but turned out to be wrong” that cause most problems. In a street fight, no one likely says “Ready set go”. The attacker does not even need sophisticated attack tools. All that is required is some social engineering question, for example “Do you have the time” and a weapon, for example a beer mug. This is how phishing and other masquerading attacks work. As imposing as Larry’s knowledge and experience may be, he insists on being completely accessible to his students. He laughs easily and balances the intensity of his classes with humor, “because it supports the learning experience. You stay awake. You have fun, you learn something and it marks the information in your memory for easier recall later.” He has been teaching CISSP and CISM certification boot camp classes at InterNetwork Defense since 2002. His own certifications include (or have included): (ISC)2's CISSP, ITIL Foundations, Cisco's, CCNP, Security+, CCDP and CSS1, ISACA CISM, CISA, CEH, ECSA , Microsoft's MCSE and MCT, as well as specific operating system credentials. Larry’s excellence in certification training has earned him (15) fifteen “Challenge Coins” from the US Government including all four major branches of the military; Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines as well as the FBI, SPAWAR, Homeland Security and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), where he was dubbed a “Jedi Knight” by the Chief of Cyber-Counter Intelligence.

About Cyber Kung Fu Instructor Tom Updegrove

As chief consultant for InterNetwork Service, an Information Security services company, Tom is responsible for daily support of the IT security infrastructure for many Philadelphia based firms. Tom regularly maintains back office support for firewalls, VPNs, IDS, malware protection, secure email , IP based CCTV, VOIP, cloud computing and many other of today's cutting edge technology issues including conducting regular penetration tests as part of patch management services. Tom also holds a number of IT certifications including Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP), CompTIA Security+, and CEH Microsoft MCSE.

As a martial artist, Tom's experience is as vast as any.  Tom has studied Martial Arts for over 40 years and is currently an 8th Degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate and holds many other belts from other styles as well including 7th Degree Black Belt in JLFS Kick Boxing. He teaches the adults in the Kenpo, Kickboxing, Grappling, and Tai Chi classes at Martial Posture, one of Philadelphia's oldest martial arts schools.  His teaching style is ultimately student guided.  What he recommends to new students is “set goals, the road to mastery is laden with many pitfalls; goal setting is done by anyone who has achieved mastery in some field.”   He has studied under legendary coaches such as Ed Parker, founder of the Ed Parker Kenpo Karate System, Joe Lewis, founder of the Joe Lewis Fighting System (JLFS) and the Godfather of American Kickboxing, Royce and Relson Gracie of the Gracie Jiu Jitsu System to name a few.  Tom recommends to his students – “Take the slow boat” because mastery takes time, energy and, more importantly, patience. Tom is also an ex Philadelphia Firefighter, who also served in the Army’s 34th Signal Battalion during the Vietnam era. Tom’s interest in electronic communication started back in the late 60’s as a microwave telephony specialist. After a 30 year career as a Professional Martial Arts instructor, in 1999 Tom along with Larry Greenblatt started developing Cisco CCNA and CCSP courseware, Tom’s specialty is labs. According to Tom “Labs can easily make or break the class. If the complexity of setting up the equipment consumes too much time the student gets frustrated and doesn’t draw much vocation experience from the exercises”. Tom is a founding member of Internetwork Defense and the “Cyber Kung Fu” brand of information security training. Tom was awarded a challenge coin from the United States Forces in Korea (USFK), where award presenter Colonel James Henderson told him and Sifu Greenblatt, “You came here to help us pass a test; you taught us how to secure the future.” Tom’s approach to teaching is in the Mahayana style, in that not only do we need to enlighten our own minds but the minds of others as well.
