Every 3 – 5 years PMI or the Project Management Institute, changes the content of the PMP exam. PMI conducts a case study to analyze the changing market for project managers, and how the responsibilities of project managers may have changed. The next exam change will be happening on July 1st, 2020 so if you are currently studying for the PMP exam you should take the exam before then. PMI has already announced all the details and released the exam content which can be found on their website. In this post we will go over all the major changes and why those changes were made.
Important Dates to Remember
- June 30, 2020, is the last day to take the current version of the PMP exam.
- July 1, 2020, is the first day to take the new version of the PMP exam.
What are the Changes?
Project management professionals need more diverse skills and approaches than ever before. The old exam focused on five major domains and each domain was weighted differently, and the new exam gets rid of two domains and only focuses on three. The three new domains are people, process, and business environment. The exam will also require candidates to use predictive, agile and hybrid approaches to answer various questions revolving around the three domains.

How to Prepare for the New PMP Exam
The new PMP will definitely be harder than the old PMP exam. Several new topics have been added that involve different approaches. PMI has announced that about half of the exam will require predictive project management approaches and the other half will represent agile or hybrid approaches. Each domain includes new tasks that underly the responsibilities of project managers within each domain area. With each of these tasks, there are different enablers that relate the task back to a real-world example in the work field. While preparing for the PMP exam it is important to keep the domains, tasks, and enablers in mind while studying to make sure you are on track with the exam. The new PMP exam is much larger than the previous so it is best to separate the domains individually to make the new content easier to digest.
