The New Cisco CCNP Explained

CISCO recently made huge changes to their entire certification program with major changes to the content, layout, and roadmap of their certifications. CCNP is one of the pathways that was changed, and it allows for the consumer to have more choices to customize the certification, more options to get continuing education credits, and more recognition through out the industry. Currently, there are several CCNP options and each option has a specific purpose and level of expertise required. The new CCNP certifications are:

  • CCNP Enterprise
  • CCNP Data Center
  • CCNP Security
  • CCNP Collaboration

Major Updates

The new CCNP is now offered in five key technologies, including enterprise, security, service provider, collaboration, and data center. The new DevNet Certified Professional exam is also now available, to validate your automation and software development skills.

Exam Changes

In the new CCNP program, each CCNP certification requires only two exams: one core exam and one concentration exam of your choice, so you can focus on your interests and needs. Each core exam covers the foundational and common concepts that are required for a candidate to be proficient in technology architecture.

Continuing Education Changes

At all levels of certification, you can now recertify by either taking exams, earning continuing education credits or a mix of both. Options of recertification are taking the exam, attending training courses, authoring content, and completing continuing education requirements. Continuing education offers a new and important option to keep your skills on the cutting edge and your certification(s) current. There has been a lot of new information added into the continuing education program so be sure to check out CISCO’s website for the full information.

I am CCNP Certified, now what?

If your CCNP migrated to the new CCNP or you’ve passed equivalent exams, keep in mind that the core exam in each technology track also qualifies you to take the CCIE lab exam. So, you’re just one step away from an expert-level certification. Plus, new exams that you take will help you recertify and get new Specialist certifications. Keep your learning journey going - it’s a win-win-win strategy.
