Three Easy Entry Level Cybersecurity Certifications

Cybersecurity has grown exponentially over the last decade and the cybersecurity industry continues to grow at a rapid rate. As of today, there is a total of 313,735 cybersecurity-related job openings, and almost all those jobs have an average annual salary of $70,000. Cybersecurity workers protect consumer's privacy and private details on a daily basis. We are at a time where privacy is very scarce and the dangerous cybersecurity talent gap that the United States is facing puts everyone’s digital privacy and infrastructure at risk. Education is the key to closing this massive talent gap, and many organizations such as Deloitte, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Northrup Grumman are spending millions of dollars in order to educate and certify their employees. It is only with the right knowledge and certifications that this talent gap can be closed, and in this article, I will cover 3 easily obtained cybersecurity certifications that will help anyone land a job in cybersecurity.

1. CompTIA Security +

Security + is an essential baseline certification needed by all cybersecurity professionals and practitioners. The Security + exam covers all of the basic cybersecurity topics such as risk management, troubleshooting common issues, and analyzing different types of malware and how they are used. The entire duration of the exam is only 90 minutes, and the exam has a maximum of 90 questions, but it is very important to delegate time to study and review the domains to ensure success on exam day. Overall, Security + should be the first certification all IT professionals should earn, and it provides a baseline foundational level of knowledge to all of its successful candidates.

2. ISC2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP)

The SSCP certification by ISC2 is another entry-level certification that can be easily attained, and this certification is perfect for those who want to move up in the cybersecurity industry. The SSCP is the perfect precursor for the CISSP, which is a highly advanced management level certification. The CISSP is arguably the most popular cybersecurity certification of all time and earning a CISSP certification can almost guarantee promotion into management level position. SSCP covers semi-advanced level cybersecurity techniques such as cryptography, risk identification, and incident response; however, unlike the Security+ certification the SSCP exam has a total of 125 questions and the full duration of the exam is 3 hours.

3. EC Council Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)

CEH is a fun and exciting certification and is mainly sought after by those with an interest in ethical hacking and penetration testing. The entire gist of the CEH certification is to have cybersecurity professionals think like hackers and then reverse engineer common black hat hacking methods in order to create a better cybersecurity environment. The CEH exam contains a total of 125 questions and the full duration of the test can be 4 hours. The exam will cover advanced cybersecurity topics such as threat modeling, exploiting vulnerabilities within networks, and various different information security tools and procedures.
