White House Announces a New Cybersecurity Competition with a Reward of $25,000

On May 2nd, 2019 the president of the United States of America issued an executive order that will hopefully bring more attention and talent to the cybersecurity industry. Some of the goals outlined in this executive order were standardizing job listings so cybersecurity workers can move around within the government, creating better employment programs between the DHS and other agencies, and incentivizing people to learn and master hacking skills with new awards and decorations.

Talent Shortage

The new executive order also addressed the shortage of as many 300,000 cybersecurity professionals within the federal government. Cybersecurity continues to be a pressing issue and the U.S is in desperate need of hardworking cybersecurity professionals and one way to find new talent is to host a competition. The “president’s cup cybersecurity competition” is supposed to identify, challenge, and reward the nations best cybersecurity experts. This competition will be available to both civilian and military and will supposedly take place before the end of the year. The minimum cash prize is $25,000 if you happen to win the competition.

It is still unclear when the cybersecurity cup will take place and details of how much money will be needed are still being worked out. This executive order, in particular, is also not backed by any additional funds for testing, recruiting, or holding competitions, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
